The Most Common Electrical Issues in Goshen Homes

Maintaining a safe and reliable electrical system is a priority for every homeowner in Goshen, IN, particularly given the demands placed on systems by modern technology and Northern Indiana’s often extreme weather conditions. The wide range of housing ages in the area means many properties face unique electrical challenges, from outdated infrastructure to seasonal usage strain. It is important to know the signs of these common issues to ensure your home remains safe and fully functional. Frequent Electrical Problems Residents Face:

  • Outdated and Under-Sized Electrical Panels: Many older homes still use fuse boxes or low-amperage breaker panels that cannot safely handle the high electrical load of modern appliances, computers, and central heating systems.
  • Aging or Compromised Wiring: Properties built before the 1960s often contain old, ungrounded wiring, such as Knob-and-Tube, which is prone to deterioration and overloading, posing a serious fire hazard that many insurance companies will not cover.
  • Frequent Circuit Breaker Trips: Repeatedly tripping breakers often indicates an overloaded circuit, where the home's original wiring cannot meet the power demands of modern life without risking overheating and damage.
  • Flickering Lights and Power Sags: These issues typically signal loose wiring connections, often resulting from years of expansion and contraction or inadequate connections, which can create dangerous arcing and voltage instability.
  • Unsafe Ungrounded Outlets (Two-Prong): The presence of two-prong outlets means there is no grounding path, which increases the risk of electrical shock and leaves sensitive electronic devices vulnerable to damage from power surges.

Do not ignore these warning signs, as electrical problems can quickly escalate from an inconvenience to a dangerous fire risk. Scheduling an electrical safety inspection with a licensed contractor is the best way to diagnose these common issues and invest in the long-term safety and reliability of your home’s electrical system.

Addressing Common Electrical Questions

How Do I Know When I Need to Upgrade My Electrical Panel?

An outdated or overloaded electrical panel can pose serious safety risks. Signs that you may need an upgrade include frequently tripping breakers, flickering lights, and reliance on multiple power strips. If your panel is over 20 years old, it’s a good idea to have it inspected by a professional.

What Are the Benefits of LED Lighting?

LED lighting is an energy-efficient, long-lasting, and environmentally friendly option. Switching to LED bulbs can significantly reduce your energy bills and maintenance costs while providing better lighting quality. LEDs also produce less heat, reducing the load on your air conditioning system.

How Can I Improve the Electrical Safety of My Home?

Improving electrical safety involves regular inspections, installing GFCI outlets in wet areas, ensuring proper grounding, and using surge protectors. Additionally, avoid overloading circuits and replace damaged cords and outlets promptly. Our electricians can perform a thorough safety inspection to identify potential hazards and recommend solutions.

Why Should I Consider Whole-House Surge Protection?

Power surges can occur due to lightning strikes, faulty wiring, or sudden power restoration. These surges can damage sensitive electronics and appliances. Whole-house surge protection systems safeguard your entire electrical system by blocking excessive voltage before it reaches your devices.

What Should I Do During a Power Outage?

During a power outage, first check if the issue is localized to your home by inspecting your circuit breaker. If the outage is widespread, report it to your utility company. Avoid using candles for lighting, and instead, use flashlights. If you rely on a generator, ensure it is properly installed and maintained to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.

  • We are having trouble getting cool air upstairs in our two story home, what can I do to make the upstairs more comfortable?
A comfortable main floor and a warm second floor is a common complaint with central air conditioning systems. This temperature variation is caused by the fact that cool air is heavy. Heavy air requires more effort to move, especially upwards. Your furnace fan has to work much harder to get the air up two stories. Additionally, cool air, unlike warm air, tends to fall, so that once you actually manage to get the air upstairs, it will naturally fall back to the first floor. Don’t despair, there are some things that you can do. Make sure your furnace fan is on the highest possible setting. Most furnaces installed today will have a multi-speed, direct drive fan motor. Have your service contractor check to make sure that the highest speed is being used for air conditioning. If your fan motor has belts and pulleys, check with your contractor about installing a larger pulley. Adjust the balancing on your ductwork to force as much cool air upstairs as possible. If your ductwork is accessible from your basement, and has dampers installed in each of the supply air runs, make sure the dampers for the upper floor are fully open. You can also close any dampers for rooms on the first floor that do not get much use, or are very small. Some examples may be a powder room, formal living or dining room. You should keep the dampers fully open for the kitchen and the main living or family area. If the ductwork is not accessible, or doesn’t have any dampers, don’t despair. You can balance the air flow by opening and closing the dampers in the supply air registers. If you cannot get a register closed, we have been told that covering the register with a telephone book works well. Don’t forget to re-balance the ductwork system when you switch over to heating. During the heating system you want most of the warm air delivered to the first floor, it will rise on its own to the second floor. Use fans to help move cooler air. Placing a large fan at the top of the stairway can help to draw the cooler air up. A ceiling fan installed on the second floor can also be a big improvement. Check the return air grills. Make sure they are clean. Consider installing “High Wall” return air grills on the second floor. High wall return air grills are installed near the ceiling, not near the floor. This enables the furnace to draw the warmest air from the top of the house back into the system. Your service contractor can give you more information and let you know if it is possible to install high wall grills on your system.
