How We Handle Sump Pump Problems

When you contact us about a sump pump issue, we know you are worried about what might happen during the next round of rain. Our customer service team listens carefully, asks focused questions about what you are seeing, and works to match you with the right appointment, whether that is emergency service or the next available same-day visit.

When our technician arrives, the first step is a careful inspection. We look at the pump, the pit, the float or sensor, the discharge line, and the electrical supply. Our factory-trained technicians check for clogs, worn or jammed parts, improper sizing, and issues with the outlet or breaker. This thorough approach helps us understand the true cause instead of just addressing a symptom.

Once we know what is going on, we walk you through our findings in plain language. We explain what is working, what is not, and the options that make sense for your home. Before any work starts, we review pricing and provide a clear proposal so you understand the cost and scope of the repair. Free proposals are available for many sump pump projects, and our goal is always to keep surprises off your bill.

Common Sump Pump Issues In Local Homes

Many homeowners contact us when they hear odd noises from the sump pit or notice water where it shouldn't be. You might notice that the pump runs constantly but the water level barely moves, or that the pump never turns on even as the water rises. In some cases, the first sign is a musty smell or a damp area along a basement wall.

Signs you should call for sump pump help include:

  • Unusual grinding, rattling, or humming sounds coming from the pit
  • A pump that runs constantly or cycles rapidly without lowering the water level
  • Water in the basement, damp spots, or visible moisture around the pit
  • A breaker that trips when the pump tries to start or a burning smell
  • A pump that does nothing at all, even as water rises in the basin

These problems often trace back to familiar causes. A float can get stuck, a screen can clog with debris, or a check valve can fail, allowing water to flow back into the pit. Motors can wear out over time, particularly in older homes where the pump has worked through many storms. Electrical issues, such as tripped breakers or worn cords, also play a role and should be checked carefully.

Homes in this region often have basements that sit close to the water table, especially in older neighborhoods. Heavy spring snowmelt and strong summer downpours can quickly overwhelm an undersized, aging, or poorly installed pump. When we visit your home, we consider not only the pump itself but also how your drainage and discharge lines handle the typical weather patterns here.

Why Homeowners Choose Great Lakes

Inviting someone into your home to work on critical equipment is a matter of trust. Many homeowners in South Bend turn to Great Lakes Heating & Air Conditioning because they know we are not a temporary operation. We have been serving South Bend and the surrounding communities since 1957 as a family-owned business committed to being here for the long term.

Our family approach shapes the way we do business. We treat customers like neighbors and work to do the right thing, even when it means taking extra time to explain options or answer questions. You are never just another job on a list. Our technicians and office team aim to provide the kind of service we would want for our own homes and families.

Another reason homeowners choose us is our ability to look at the whole picture. Our team handles heating, cooling, water heaters, plumbing, and electrical work, so we understand how these systems interact. If your sump pump problem involves a tripped circuit or an outlet issue, we can address that along with the pump itself, saving you the hassle of calling multiple contractors.

Convenience matters when water is at stake. We offer 24/7 emergency support, same-day appointments when possible, and virtual consultations that can help you decide what to do next. Our goal is to make it easier to get answers quickly, especially when you are not sure how urgent a situation might be. Throughout every visit, we focus on clear communication, upfront pricing, and solutions designed to last.

What To Do If Your Pump Fails

Sump pump issues rarely happen at a convenient time. Many homeowners first notice a problem during a heavy thunderstorm or while watching snow melt in early spring. If your pump is not working and water is rising, or if you suspect a failure, there are a few steps you can take to help protect your home until help arrives.

Safety comes first. If you see standing water around electrical outlets or appliances, avoid stepping into the water and do not touch electrical panels. If you can safely reach the pump, look into the pit to see whether the float is stuck or if anything obvious is blocking the intake, but do not attempt risky repairs in a flooded area.

You can also move boxes, furniture, and valuables off the floor in areas where water might spread. If the situation is not immediately dangerous, note what you are hearing and seeing, such as whether the pump hums, runs constantly, or stays silent. This information can help our team understand what might be happening before we arrive.

When you are ready, contact us so we can get you on the schedule. Let our team know if water is already entering the basement or if a storm is in progress, so we can prioritize appropriately. We work to provide same-day or emergency service for homes in the area whenever conditions and call volume allow.

Frequently Asked Questions

How fast can your team get here during a storm?

During storms, we prioritize calls where water is entering the basement or the pump has failed completely. Response times depend on conditions and call volume, but we provide 24/7 emergency service and work to reach homes in South Bend as quickly as we can.

Will you tell me if repair is better than replacement?

Yes, we explain when repair is practical and when replacement may be more sensible. Our technician reviews the age, condition, and performance of your pump, then walks you through options and pricing. Our goal is to recommend long-term solutions that fit your budget and your home.

Can you handle both the pump and electrical issues?

Our team handles plumbing and electrical work, so in many cases, we can address both the sump pump and related power concerns. If a tripped breaker, outlet, or wiring issue is involved, we work to diagnose and resolve it safely during the same service visit.

How much does sump pump repair usually cost?

Costs vary based on the problem, the type of pump, and whether parts need to be replaced. After we inspect your system, we review findings with you and provide a clear proposal before work starts. Free proposals are available for many repair and replacement projects.

How can I prevent my sump pump from failing again?

Regular checks and maintenance reduce the risk of failure. Testing the pump, keeping the pit free of debris, and having our team inspect it periodically can help. We also discuss options such as backup pumps and alarms to provide additional protection during heavy weather.

  • We are having trouble getting cool air upstairs in our two story home, what can I do to make the upstairs more comfortable?
A comfortable main floor and a warm second floor is a common complaint with central air conditioning systems. This temperature variation is caused by the fact that cool air is heavy. Heavy air requires more effort to move, especially upwards. Your furnace fan has to work much harder to get the air up two stories. Additionally, cool air, unlike warm air, tends to fall, so that once you actually manage to get the air upstairs, it will naturally fall back to the first floor. Don’t despair, there are some things that you can do. Make sure your furnace fan is on the highest possible setting. Most furnaces installed today will have a multi-speed, direct drive fan motor. Have your service contractor check to make sure that the highest speed is being used for air conditioning. If your fan motor has belts and pulleys, check with your contractor about installing a larger pulley. Adjust the balancing on your ductwork to force as much cool air upstairs as possible. If your ductwork is accessible from your basement, and has dampers installed in each of the supply air runs, make sure the dampers for the upper floor are fully open. You can also close any dampers for rooms on the first floor that do not get much use, or are very small. Some examples may be a powder room, formal living or dining room. You should keep the dampers fully open for the kitchen and the main living or family area. If the ductwork is not accessible, or doesn’t have any dampers, don’t despair. You can balance the air flow by opening and closing the dampers in the supply air registers. If you cannot get a register closed, we have been told that covering the register with a telephone book works well. Don’t forget to re-balance the ductwork system when you switch over to heating. During the heating system you want most of the warm air delivered to the first floor, it will rise on its own to the second floor. Use fans to help move cooler air. Placing a large fan at the top of the stairway can help to draw the cooler air up. A ceiling fan installed on the second floor can also be a big improvement. Check the return air grills. Make sure they are clean. Consider installing “High Wall” return air grills on the second floor. High wall return air grills are installed near the ceiling, not near the floor. This enables the furnace to draw the warmest air from the top of the house back into the system. Your service contractor can give you more information and let you know if it is possible to install high wall grills on your system.
